Best of British Loaf

Hello Readers,

This is my take on the classic white sandwich loaf to make it a little more exciting using two classic British ingredients, a crispy cheesy topping and a salty, meaty ham filling. The cheese topping is literally grated cheddar cheese, just like you get in the fresh bread section of a supermarket. However, I have added sliced ham pieces for a true celebration of British ingredients.

Ingredients:

500g strong white flour

10g salt

7g dried yeast

50g softened butter

290ml water

1 slice ham

Cheddar cheese (or other hard cheese) for topping

Method:

  1. Put the flour, salt, yeast and butter into a large bowl and add. The water bit by bit until a soft dough is formed (you may not need all of the water).

  2. Tip the dough onto a lightly oiled surface and knead for 5 minutes until the dough is pliable and strechy. Put the dough into an oiled bowl and leave for 1 hour to prove.

  3. Tip the dough out onto an oiled surface and fold in torn up pieces of ham from your slice-you can make these whatever size you would like them. Put the dough into an oiled 2lb loaf tin and leave for 1 hour.

  4. Preheat the oven to 230C/210fan/gas 8. Sprinkle/spray water all over the top of the uncooked loaf and then cover with grated cheese. Bake 30-35 minutes until remove the bread from the tin and leave on a wire rack to cool.
